Are you planning a road trip this summer? Don't have satellite radio in your car? No worries, the Summit County Library is here to help you. Check out our large collection of books-on-CD, and yes, we still have books-on-tape for those of you with older vehicles. But even better is the library's downloadable collection, where you can check out audiobooks, videos, music and now e-books to take on your trip with no worries for fines — plus you can't lose, break or scratch these items. The downloadable collection is available from the library's web site at www.co.summit.co.us/library; just click on the “downloadable” button. All you need is a card from your Summit County Library to enjoy five items from this collection. Audio books, music, and videos check out for one week and then automatically go off your computer, but once you've transferred them to your player, they stay on for as long as you want. The downloadable e-books check out for two weeks and automatically go off your computer or player.
There's something in the books-on-CD and tape collections for everyone, and they check out to you for two weeks with no limit on how many you may have. If you're planning a long trip, you can go online to the library's web site and renew your items while you're on the road. Just look up your library account with your name and the bar code from your card, or call the library and get them renewed over the phone. From J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter books to Junie B. Jones' elementary readers and many Newberry award winners for children and young adults, the library has the gamut for children to listen to in the car. If you want to revisit classics such as Jane Austen's “Emma,” F. Scott Fitzgerald's “The Great Gatsby” or Mark Twain's “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” they are available on both cassette and CD as well as in a downloadable version.
Let's not forget the bestsellers, for we try to purchase almost all of them on CD and now in downloadable; older titles we still have on tape. Are you a fan of Janet Evanovich, David Baldacci, James Patterson, or Nora Roberts? They all may be found at the library and even as e-books. Not a fiction fan? Then why not try Bill Bryson and Frances Mayes for travel titles, or how about Malcolm Gladwell, who wrote “The Tipping Point” and “Blink?” Or tickle your funny bone by checking out Dennis Miller, Dave Barry, Ellen DeGeneres, or George Carlin.
If you're lucky enough to have a new vehicle with a DVD player, don't forget the library has a significant collection of DVDs for children. You may check out four DVDs at a time for one week, and these can be renewed for another week. Our children's DVDs include Disney classics and “Anne of Green Gables” as well as current titles like “Wall-E,” “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille.” You can also download videos for children; they check out for one week, but they stay on your player for as long as you wish. Some possible titles for you to consider are: “Bear Snores On,” “Casey at the Bat” and “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs.”
The library also has a significant collection of foreign films on DVD, which also check out for one week with a limit of four at one time. We have lots of titles from Lina Wertmuller's “Swept Away” to Academy award winner “Mar Adentro” (a.k.a. “The Sea Inside”), 2005's Best Foreign Language film. The collection consists of films from China, Japan, Germany, Spain, France, Australia, Israel, India, and numerous other countries.
