Through two matches, it seems the only thing that can slow down the
U-20 Women's National Team is the Bahamian heat.
Led by Summit High alum Jozy Gessner, the Americans battled through 90-degree weather to top the Caribbean Select Side 30-7 on Wednesday in the North American Caribbean Rugby Association Championships.
Although the win was decisive in the end, the U-20 squad held only a slight 10-7 edge at halftime, which head coach Bryn Chivers chalked up to heat-related fatigue.
Regardless, the U.S. has now outscored its two opponents by a 115-7 margin in its two wins. The Americans play in the tourney's title tilt Friday against the Canadian under-20 team.
And on Wednesday, Summit's Gessner played a large roll in the win.
The team's captain, Gessner scored two tries against the Caribbean Select, the top women's team of that region.
Gessner, the Colorado State Player of the Year as a senior in 2008, was an All-American as a freshman at Colorado State University last season. Gessner has played for the national U-20 squad since she was 16.
Also appearing in the match was SHS junior-to-be Haley Anderson. After becoming the youngest American to ever score a try in an international match on Sunday, Anderson came into the game as a sub at the seven spot.
