Tonight celebrates the 30th season of the Breckenridge Music Festival Orchestra. The only sad part: It's also the summer's last BMF Orchestra concert.
The Grand Orchestra Showcase features flutist Helen Blackburn, harpist Megan Stout, pianist Michael Linville and percussionist Drew Lang. The ensemble will perform Hanson's “Serenade for Flute and Harp,” Khachaturian's “Piano Concerto in D-Flat,” Ewazen's “Concert for Marimba and Orchestra” and Liszt's “Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2.”
“Lang has a passion for furthering the marimba as a solo and chamber music instrument,” said Marcia Kaufmann, executive director of the BMF. “He has commissioned, recorded and premiered works for marimba in solo, chamber and concerto settings. Along with his wife, Helen Blackburn, they have performed music for flute and marimba across the United States.”
Lang regularly performs with the Dallas Wind Symphony, Casa Manana Musicals and Dallas Opera Orchestra and has made the BMF his summer home for 7 years.
He encourages people who may not be familiar with orchestral music to come tonight to “learn about the ‘good' music and hear it played at a high level,” Lang said.
Personally, he enjoys all types of music. He plays bodhran, an Irish drum for sessions and likes performing on a drum set in jazz groups — plus he plays in a classic rock band, made up of opera musicians!
He said if he weren't a musician, he'd probably wind up being a submariner or a scientist. Personality wise, he describes himself in musical terms as adagio — a tempo having slow movement, restful at ease.
