Finally, after four stages of the Breck Epic mountain bike race, the leaders in the top men's category are starting to separate.
Entering the day with a 0.5-second lead, defending champion Jeremiah Bishop won Wednesday's “Aqueduct Stage” by more than six-and-a-half minutes over Alex Grant.
The stage started and finished at the B&B Trailhead, taking riders over Heinous Hill, while doing loops on the Colorado Trail, Galena Gulch Road and Rock Island Gulch Road.
Bishop completed the ride in 3 hours, 22 minutes and 44 seconds. His overall, four-stage time of 13 hours, 5 minutes and 52 seconds gives him a healthy 6:36 advantage over Grant.
Breckenridge's Josh Tostado, a regular front-runner in ultra-endurance competitions, was third on the day and remains in third place overall.
Meanwhile, Pua Sawicki once again dominated the women's field, winning the fourth stage by nearly 16 minutes. She now has 1-hour-and-20-minute lead over Ivonne Kraft.
In singlespeed, Evan Plews extended his lead, and locals David Overstreet and Mark Thompson have an 11-minute advantage in the Duo 80+ category (riders race in two-person teams, and the ages of the two competitors has to add up to older than 80).
The race continues today on the Wheeler and Peaks trails, starting and finishing at the Four O'Clock Trailhead.
Competition wraps up Friday with the “Gold Dust Loop,” which starts and finishes at the Stephen C. West Ice Arena in Breck.
The Breck Epic is a six-stage race, covering the trails of Summit County. Each stage begins and ends at a trailhead around Breck.
