At most NCAA D-III football programs, the traveling is relatively minimal. Most teams are within a couple hours on a bus and rarely do players leave their respective time zones for competition.
That is, except for 2009 Summit High grad Bobby Daigle and the rest of his Central College (Iowa) teammates, who have a game in Italy this week.
The Dutch are currently on a nine-day trip through Italy — visiting Rome, Florence, Venice and Trieste — and will have a pair of practices as well as a game against a local Italian team.
“We try to go on a trip every three or four years so that we can allow every player the opportunity to travel during their Central career,” Central coach Jeff McMartin said in a press release. “ ... They'll create some life-long memories.”
Daigle, a sophomore with the Dutch, played in one game as a wide receiver last fall, making one catch for seven yards. He played both wideout and defensive back during his years with the Tigers.
Central College plays in the Iowa Conference and has made 20 NCAA D-III tournament appearances. The team was 8-2 last season.
