The Silverthorne Storm Gymnastics Team had its first meet of the 2011 season on May 21 at Carbon Valley Rec Center in Frederick.
The girls competed quite well, said coach Ben Way. Out of 34 20 of them qualified for regionals in the all around (AA).
The team competes in the CARA league, which is a recreational league within Colorado. There are several age divisions and levels, so many of the girls had a chance to reach the podium.
Tessa Gunnin, who is one of the team leaders, won bars and placed second on floor in the O-4 division.
Kimberly Coffin won the AA vault and floor in her O-1 group, while Sophie Imamura had a strong showing, placing first on floor and second on everything else in her O-2 division.
Jenessa Bjork took first on vault with a strong handspring half twist.
The Akers family also had a good day, as all three placed first in an event. Abby and Kait hit the top of the podium on beam, while Annette hit two of her best vaults ever to win that event.
The next two meets were compulsory levels, where everyone competes in the same routine.
Three C-5 girls qualified into regionals in AA. Abby Hiller hit a clean floor routine taking first on that event while placing second in AA.
Delanie Bargell won AA easily, Coach Way said. The C-4 group is so big they couldn't help but dominate the podium, with 18 girls making a trip to the award stand.
“That could change when we face Aurora, one of the biggest and most dominant teams in the league, at the next couple meets,” Way said. “I expect Sammy Cason and Paige Schlegel to battle it out for top spots in their age group throughout this year.”
Rookie gymnast Lilyanne Tyson hit an amazing vault for a 7-year-old and scored a 9.2, winning that event. And Emma McComb also had a very strong first meet ever, placing first on vault and bars and second in AA.
The team's next meet is in Aurora on June 4.
