Trying to hop freight train, CSU student loses both legs

A 17-year-old Colorado State University student's legs were severed at the knees when she fell under a freight train while trying to hop aboard Monday, officials say.

One other man was briefly dragged by the train and received minor injuries, said Cmdr. Jeff Satur, Longmont police spokesman.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, was flown by helicopter to Denver Health Medical Center following the 1:35 p.m. accident in which her legs were amputated, Satur said.

"It's terrible," Satur said. "It really highlights the dangers of trying to hop a train. It is not safe by any means."
