Lake Dillon Theatre has announced its 2012 schedule, and once again, there's “something for everyone,” executive director Josh Blanchard said.
The company will produce a handful of comedies — one traditional (“Bad Dates”), one dark (“Behanding in Spokane”), two musical (“Xanadu” and “Marry Me a Little”), one dramatic and musical (“Kiss of the Spider Woman”), and finally, a farce called “Fox on the Fairway.” The company also hopes to produce a children's/family show, though it hasn't decided on the title.
“In the vein of previous seasons, we are offering two juxtaposed productions with ‘Xanadu' and ‘Kiss of the Spider Woman' (a la 2010's dark ‘Rent' and hippie love-fest ‘Hair' and 2011's darker ‘Tommy' and lovable ‘Godspell,'” Blanchard said.
This year, the company will switch from “season” schedules to calendar years. But true to form, the Lake Dillon Theatre will continue to present regional premieres.
“Bringing new works to Summit County audiences is an important part of our mission,” Blanchard said. “We want to entertain, and sometimes challenge, our audiences with new works, and ‘A Behanding in Spokane,' ‘A Fox on the Fairway' and the yet-to-be announced title will do just that.”
The company has already held auditions in New York City for its spring productions and will hold local auditions for that time period “soon,” Blanchard said. The 2012 line-up offers approximately 40 different acting roles, with Blanchard estimating 50-75 percent cast from out-of-state. He hopes to fill the rest with Colorado actors. In addition, the theater will hire about 20 technical staff and stage managers.

Upcoming changes
For the rest of the year, the Lake Dillon Theatre will be mostly dark, except for its annual fall concert, “Broadway Then” (see next week's Scene for coverage). The theater also will host several other events, including a harp concert featuring Janet Harriman and Dexter Wiggins, a staged reading of “Miraculosity” by Alex Miller, and a series of children's puppetry performances by Toni Napalitano.Aside from moving its fiscal year to match the calendar year, the company is renovating the small theater by updating the lobby, bathrooms and backstage areas.
“We are taking a hiatus these two months for the renovations and to gear up for the 2012 season,” Blanchard said.
There also has been talk about building a new, larger theater, possibly at La Riva Del Lago, but no decisions have been firmed up, and more substantial information will be upcoming as the Town of Dillon and the Lake Dillon Theatre Company's board of directors come closer to a specific plan.
