Freeskier Dean Cummings is on tour, and he's stopping in Dillon on Wednesday to bring his big mountain and Alaska heli-skiing moments to Christy Sports and the Dillon Dam Brewery's big screen.
The showing of “The Steep Life” is free to attend, and it starts at 7 p.m. at the brewery.
The film comes after Cummings presents his new line of skis and his award-winning avalanche safety talk, “Be Snow Smart,” at the Dillon Christy Sports (across from the brewery) at 5. Cummings will also be on hand to sign posters and for an informal meet-and-greet.
Cummings won the World Extreme Skiing Championships in 1995. Today, he's a filmmaker and mountain guide for recreation skiers as well as ski film crews who tap into his skills to assess the safety of the slopes and minimize risk. He now lives in Alaska and owns and operates Valdez H20 Heli-Adventures.
His snow safety talk annually reaches roughly 20,000 people with practical, easy to implement recreation safety procedures. It covers the basics of appropriate backcountry behavior, Christy Sports hardgoods supervisor Shaun Spacht said.
“For those people looking to get familiar, break the ice with backcountry travel, it's going to be a great opportunity,” he said, adding that it's by no means a full certification course.
“It's also a good way to refresh your knowledge and hear the opinion of a true pioneer,” Spacht said, explaining the benefit of the talk to the experienced backcountry enthusiast.
Christy Sports is interesting in hosting the talk because with the growth of backcountry travel, it wants to provide opportunities for people to learn more. The Cummings talk may be the first of many such offerings at the store.
“We want to go above and beyond to reach out to the community,” Spacht said.
Cummings' trio of skis — the Tazlina, Kodiak and Karen'cito — will be on display at the store during the avalanche safety talk. They were developed from Cummings' two decades of skiing innovative lines in demanding environments.
The new skis feature proprietary “Lay-Down Technology” — a “unique hybrid combination of powder and carving design that eliminates chatter and allows the ski to confidently track in all conditions from powder to hard snow,” according to a press release.
Cummings said he is confident his Lay-Down Technology has created “the most forgiving ski for the greatest variety of conditions on the market today,” in the press release.
Cummings' tour involves appearances at select backcountry ski retail outposts along the West Coast, East Coast and in the Rocky Mountains, including the 2012 SIA Snow Show in Denver.
