Summit Soap co-owner Dan Fernandez loves Conan O'Brien. So much so that he's hoping his company's moniker will become the second handle O'Brien follows on Twitter.
“He's just a tall, goofy Irishman,” Fernandez said. “My favorite kind of humor is the kind of person not afraid to make fun of himself.”
Fernandez recently noticed that O'Brien, despite having 4,579,937 followers on the social-networking website (as of Friday morning), is only following one person, a woman named Sarah Slowik from Michigan. O'Brien picked her out at random in early 2010.
So in the hopes of getting O'Brien's attention, and of boosting business, Fernandez started a special promotion called Soap for Conan. For every order placed on the company's website using the promo code CONAN, the user gets 25 percent off their total and O'Brien gets a free bar of soap. The special runs until Jan. 31, when they'll tally up the number of orders and send the soap off to O'Brien all at once.
“He's a rootsy kind of guy, and we're a rootsy kind of company,” Fernandez said.
Summit Soap, based in Breckenridge, uses recycled vegetable oil collected from Colorado restaurants and mixes it with a few other ingredients, like essential oils and herbs to make “flavor” combinations like lavender, cardamom and chamomile. The company has been in existence for about a year, and is a spin-off of its sister business, Summit Greasecycling, which collects used cooking oil and turns it into clean energy, cleaners and lubricants. And, of course, soap.
“With our grease business, it's been all about spreading the word ... doing the real good thing not just the feel good thing,” Fernandez said. “Gaining interest is one thing, but gaining true support is the challenge.”
If the soap business can make more money, then Fernandez and co-owner Dara Lor can give more back to the local sustainability movement, Fernandez said.
So far, they've only raised two bars for O'Brien, but they hope to raise as many as possible.
“We'd love for Conan to follow us. He'd be a fan of us, and we'd be a fan of him,” Fernandez said. “It would be a great shout-out for Summit Soap. If he approves of Summit Soap, a lot of other people would hear about it, and hopefully approve of it as well.”
To grab a bar or two, go to www.summitsoap.com and enter promo code CONAN before confirming the order at checkout.
