Re. “Go take it off the mountain” by Time Lydon, opinion, Jan. 9
Tim, I’m so glad you wrote “Take it off the mountain.” Your premise seems to be that you and snowboarders should not have to look at a veterans’ war memorial religious figure while on public property. That by having a figure of Jesus so strategically placed incites the snowboarders to defame the religious figure that sits on privately leased property.
I remember as a child, hearing of a group of boys that had set a cat afire. The poor mother tried to stand up for her bully son by saying that all of us know of boys that go through a period of injuring animals. And after all, it was not an “indoor” family pet.
A few years later, a rape case used a new bold defense. They said that the victim was wearing a skirt too short to be acceptable. I found this an interesting comment, as countries where women wear head-to-toe burkas, also have high rates of rape.
That young people wish to put their ski apparel on the figure of Jesus does not insult me as a Christian, (or as a veteran). Remember, he wore a crown of thorns.
Our world is filled with religious buildings and symbols as well as memorials. Do you remember “when in Rome”? When traveling abroad, it is prudent to go prepared to show respect for local traditions. Unfortunately, in America, many of our youth are being taught disrespect, rather than respect for our history and other's traditions.
Tim, our country was found on freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. Unfortunately, too many public schools are removing history and civics from the classrooms because they do not know how to teach it without including the religion. Teachers who do not know the freedoms of Americans mistakenly tell a student he cannot dress in a skit as a historical figure because of religious association, and in another school, tell a student he cannot even mention his religion.
Tim, you said that a veteran organization is leasing the property for their war memorial. One of my husband's favorite sayings is “there are few atheists in the fox hole.”
Tim, I suggest that if you served your country in the military, as we both did, it may be easier for you to understand the statement.
I applaud the community of Whitefish, as difficult as it is in America now, to stand up for their rights in showing respect to their veterans, and their choice of a war memorial.
