The Summit High wrestling team had solid results last week with a tri-meet at Battle Mountain on Wednesday and 12-school tournament in Lake County on Saturday.
The team dominated the tri-meet, beating up on Vail and Clear Creek County.
“It was a pretty one-sided dual, as it should be. We should out wrestle both of those schools,” said head coach Pete Baker.
The Tigers went on to take fifth overall in Leadville on Saturday. With only nine wrestlers filling 14 weight classes, the team probably could have placed in the top three overall if they brought more healthy wrestlers.
Saturday's results:
• Stetson Fowler: first place, 152-pound
• Bryan Daniels, second place, 113-pound
• Jesus Casillas: second place, 285-pound
• Gregorio Munoz: third place, 145-pound
• Jonathan Ramirez: third place, 170-pound
• Tyler Blackford: fourth place, 160-pound
Fowler wrestled to a first place result and rang up his 99th career win after dropping down to the 152 weight class. He also won the Outstanding Wrestler Award.
After losing to the returning 160 state champion from last year, Fowler decided to cut weight and wrestled in the 152 weight class for the first time this season.
“I think that's going to make him really competitive,” said Baker. “It gives him a great shot at being the state champion at 152. It was a good decision on his part. I kept bringing it up, and he decided to go for it. It was pretty unanimous at all of his matches — he won by pins.”
One of the highlights for the team was Ramirez making a comeback in the third/fourth-place match by pinning a kid that beat him earlier in the day.
The Tigers have another tri-meet at Eagle Valley on Thursday before taking the weekend off.
