The Tigers prevented a two-game losing skid from turning into a losing streak on Saturday, squeaking out a 3-2 win over Dakota Ridge at home.
“It wasn't the prettiest game of hockey I've seen, but we were able to get it done,” said head coach Chris Ruhly. “It was a must-win game, and we were able to take care of business. A win's a win, and we'll take it any way we can.”
The Tigers came out strong with an early power-play goal by Drake Blass, assisted by Sean Farley and Jack Nevocosi, which Dakota Ridge matched four minutes later. Summit had the lone goal in the second period by Farley. Dakota Ridge evened it up early in the third, but Summit closed out the game with the go-ahead goal by Blass in the final minutes of the contest.
The coach was disappointed that the Tigers were only able to muster three goals out of 48 shots on net, compared to Dakota's 25 shots. The game shouldn't have been quite so close.
“(Dakota Ridge) is definitely not one of the stronger teams in the league, which is why it was a little disappointing for us with the outcome of the score,” Ruhly said. “But they came to play, and their goaltender made some good saves. But the fact of the matter is, you can't put the puck through the goalie; you've got to hit some corners.”
The game was rich with penalties — 20 total. Dakota Ridge collected three unsportsmanlike conduct penalties, the last of which landed Patrick Roy in the box for 10 minutes. Summit's Chris Dankof spent 10 minutes in the box for checking from behind/misconduct. All in all, Summit was on the better side of the penalty tally, with eight total.
“It's about converting on our opportunities. We only had one power-play goal and numerous other opportunities,” Ruhly said. “We got in some penalty trouble there towards the end, and they did a nice job killing penalties. We started to get a little tired, and they took it to us.
“If we play the way we played (on Saturday) next weekend, it will be a blowout, not in our favor,” he added.
Tyrus Vanmatre played all 51 minuets in net and logged 23 saves out of 25 shots on goal.
“We've got a full week of practice. Then, we have to travel to Windsor to play a very tough Resurrection Christian team, and then we're back home against Standley Lake. We don't have any easy games the rest of the way. There are going to be a couple must-wins and a couple battles that we'll have to see what happens after 51 minutes. And that's our problem: we're not playing a full 51 minutes.”
The Tigers improved to 4-3 in conference (8-5 overall). The team sits in seventh in the division.
