After collapsing at wrestling practice Wednesday night and being air-lifted to Denver, Summit High School Senior Tristan White was on life support and still in critical condition Thursday, according to Summit School District spokeswoman Jaimee Borger.
The cause of White's condition is still unknown. An additional statement from the school Thursday afternoon said the next 24 to 48 hours will be crucial for White.
Borger said the update was the most recent the district had received, which came through high school staff that have contact with White's family.
After White collapsed, emergency responders from Red, White and Blue Fire District, Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue, the Summit County Sheriff's Office and Summit County Ambulance Service arrived at the scene. He was taken to St. Anthony Summit Medical Center before being air-lifted to Denver; Borger said the family has asked the name of the hospital not be disclosed.
The district had counselors from Summit County Advocates and Colorado West Mental Health on hand today for students and faculty. Borger said there have been people utilizing the services.
“It's a sad day here at Summit High School,” Borger said. “Everyone is keeping the White family and their friends in their thoughts.”
Students are going through their normal routines, and administrators have been visiting classes on White's schedule. A student unity retreat and wrestling match scheduled for today was canceled.
White has been attending Summit schools since kindergarten.
A statement from the school district reads: “White is a 17-year-old senior who is well liked by many students at SHS. He is an active member of the symphonic band and has written original compositions. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time.”
Wednesday night, friends established a Facebook event, “Wear White to Show Support for Tristan!” The page summary reads: “We have always worn white to show our love and prayers that are radiating towards our friend or community member that had been hurt or killed. I request we all join together tomorrow, Feb. 2, and wear white to show our collective support for Tristan White, and to show him we care.”
Friends are posting that they're wearing white and praying for him.
