Martha Ellen Hibberd, 40-year resident of Summit County, passed away Saturday, Jan. 28, at home in Breckenridge.
Martha was born on February 23, 1947 in Kirkwood, Missouri. She was the daughter of Elinor and William Hibberd. She leaves behind two sisters, Sandra Jackson of Philadelphia, Penn. and Margery Swim of Green Valley, Ariz. , and niece Heather Burfeind of Ellensburg, Wash. and nephew Michael Swim, of St. Albans, Vt.
Martha grew up in Summit, N.J. and spent summers at her beloved Lake George, N.Y. She graduated with a BFA in ceramics from Alfred University, in Alfred, N.Y. and did graduate studies in ceramics at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo.
She moved to Summit County in 1970 and worked at Ski Tip Ranch (where she was famous for the “Martharita.”) She then started The Boss Mine Pottery with Judy Dercum. In 1979 she started Fingerprints at Keystone and in 1982 Martha partnered with Terry McGrath to start The Hibberd McGrath Gallery in a cabin at Ski Tip Ranch, which later relocated to their current location on Main Street in Breckenridge.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date. Donations to your favorite arts charity in lieu of flowers would be appreciated.
