Meet canceled
Due to the sudden critical illness of one of the wrestling team's members, this meet has been canceled.
For those who don't enjoy traveling long distances, tonight is the night to check out Summit High wrestling action. The Tigers are set to take on Wheat Ridge in a dual meet on their home mat at 6.
There was originally no home meet scheduled for Summit this year, but head coach Pete Baker insisted that the community recognize the wrestlers, especially the seniors, this season.
The four senior wrestlers include Tristan White, Gregorio Munoz, Jonathan Ramirez and Stetson Fowler, who is ineligible to compete this week but will be recognized for his efforts this season nonetheless.
“We got the schedule and we didn't have a home meet, so I actually had to go get one for us,” Baker said. “You've got kids like Stetson (Fowler) — wrestling is his sport. And for him to not get recognized at home, that would have been a shame. To not have to travel and to wrestle in front of your friends and family, it's a big deal for the kids.”
Despite being down their top wrestler (Fowler, who recently dropped to the 152 lb. weight class and is gunning for a state championship), the coach likes their chances against Wheat Ridge, whom they have defeated twice already this season.
The wrestling team is coming off a tough 55-9 loss against Eagle Valley last week. To the Tigers' credit the Devils of Eagle also routed Coal Ridge 52-9 at the day's tri-meet.
“They're a very solid program,” Baker said. “The difference between us and them is they have 30 or 40 kids in the junior high program. They have a solid feeder program that feeds the high school.”
The Tigers traveled to Steamboat on Tuesday, where they lost 39-30 due to forfeiting matches that the team was unable to fill. “We won on the mats, but gave up too many forfeits,” Baker said.
