It was with a heavy heart that the Summit High alpine ski team took to the slopes at Loveland for its scheduled race on Friday. Certainly, the students' and coaches' minds were elsewhere as they received news of Summit student Tristan White's passing yesterday afternoon.
“It was a tough day, but we are very proud of the student-athletes today,” said head coach Karl Barth. “We got word before the second run, and the skiers from Summit and many other teams gathered for a moment of silence offered by the race's host Platte Canyon, and there was a lot of emotion for those there.”
The day's other high school sporting events were either canceled or postponed.
“At the time, we all thought he was fighting and had a very good chance to stay with us,” freshman Michaela Lecklitner wrote in a letter to the Summit Daily Friday evening.
The team members raced with large duct-tape “TWs” on their helmets and wore white ribbons in White's honor.
“As the day went on we received the news saying he had passed. This struck my team very hard and made it very hard to want to keep racing. It's amazing how one person can impact so many people. But our coach told us that even though we were all sad, we had to race — and race for him. Along with the other teams that were there, we took a moment to remember him and the race went on. Summit raced with pride and for him.”
Lecklitner skied to a 12th-place finish and qualified for the state meet.
Ciarra Morrison finished fifth and skied with the form she admitted she had been missing. Kat Werckman (a senior who kicked out right after the moment of silence) moved up into 11th.
Robert Powell took fourth for the boys with a huge “TW” duct taped to his helmet. Lucas Michieli took eighth, and Ridge Strickler ripped the sixth fastest second run, despite hiking on the first.
The weekend's two hockey games have been moved to Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. (at home versus Standley Lake) and Feb. 18 at 2:45 p.m. (on the road versus Resurrection Christian).
Today's wrestling meet has been moved to Bear Creek High School. Weigh-in is at 8 a.m. with the meet kicking off at 9.
The swim and dive team will consolidate its meet into a single day, today, at the Meyers pool in Arvada at 7:15 a.m.
Friday's boys' and girls' basketball games have also been rescheduled for Monday.
