Keep the Super Bowl competitive spirit alive in the upcoming Arapahoe Basin Beacon Bowl, an event developed by the A-Basin Ski Patrol to teach and test skills for the backcountry.
Grab the beacon, a giving spirit, and the energy for an after-party to take part in Saturday's 10th annual event, which includes an après ski gathering.
The event benefits the Colorado Avalanche Information Center (CAIC), and begins with patrol launching the Beacon Bowl — an avalanche transceiver competition — at 9:15 a.m. It's designed for both recreational and professional users.
Free beacon clinics with A-Basin Ski Patrol and Back Country Access will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. An avalanche dog and snow-pit demonstration will follow at 1:15. The competition, clinics and demonstrations will take place on-mountain at the base of the Lenawee Mountain Lift.
A $25 registration fee for the Beacon Bowl competition will be donated to the CAIC and will include a raffle ticket, a beverage and a slice of pizza at the 3:30 après ski party. Registration is in the A-Frame beginning at 8 a.m.
Prizes for the Beacon Bowl are provided by Spyder. A raffle, silent auction and live auction will take place for lift tickets, ski passes, Avalanche tickets, concert tickets, a New Belgium cruiser bike, snow cat tour for two and more. Proceeds from pizza and beer sales at the New Belgium-sponsored after-party will also be donated to the CAIC.
The CAIC provides forecasting and public education surrounding avalanches in Colorado, a natural and human-triggered phenomenon that has killed more people in Colorado than any other natural hazard since 1950. CAIC's goal is to minimize those human and economic impacts.
