It's been a difficult week for the entire Summit High community, but certainly the wrestling team is among the hardest hit by the week's tragedy.
The Tiger wrestlers took to the mats for the league meet at Elizabeth Saturday with five kids placing in their first meet since the loss of teammate Tristan White.
“It was a good way for those kids to come back and overcome everything they went through this week,” said head coach Pete Baker. “They really showed they could overcome the adversity of dealing with the loss of a teammate. I was really proud of them.”
The team observed a moment of silence before the National Anthem and is collecting funds for White's family.
The Tigers had some pretty solid results, as well.
Nick Wittrock took second in the 106-lb. division, competing strong in the championship match against a wrestler he had faced several times this season. “It was a really tough grind-it-out wrestling match,” Baker said. His opponent won on points, but Wittrock finished all-conference with the place.
Moving up the weights, Tyler Blackford took fourth at the 160 division. “That's a tough weight class, and he wrestled really well,” Baker said.
Jonathan Ramirez took second at 170, which earns him all-conference recognition. “He met a tough kid in the finals and lost by points,” Baker said.
Canyon Hitt had some good luck with another athlete unable to wrestle and wound up taking fourth at 182.
Last but not least, Jesus Casillas took third in the 285-lb. division. “He wrestled really well. He lost to a kid who is a two-time returning state qualifier. So all in all, the kids went out and they wrestled to the best of their abilities,” Baker said.
“With an activity like wrestling, you can't dwell on anything but what you're doing in that moment,” Baker added. “You can't think about something else when somebody's trying to beat on you. So I think it was really good to have the kids back out there. The reason wrestlers are the way we are is because we don't lie down and give up. And these guys went out and wrestled and performed.”
Ramirez and Wittrock earned all-conference recognition in the JeffCo League, while Casillas earned an honorable mention.
Next weekend, the team is set to compete again at regionals, through which the wrestlers can qualify for the state meet. Contender Stetson Fowler has regained eligibility and is scheduled to wrestle this week.
