An avalanche safety level 1 course is slated for Feb. 20-22 for approximately $250 in Summit County.
The course certifies its participants under American Institute for Avalanche Research and Education (AIARE) standards.
The classroom portion of each day will take place at the Summit County Community and Senior Center in Frisco. The course includes daily field time, requiring backcountry travel gear such as snowshoes, touring skis or split-board and a beacon, shovel and probe.
The AIARE Level 1 is designed to help students identify avalanche terrain, develop a solid decision-making framework, understand the fundamentals of snowpack instabilities and hone companion-rescue skills.
The class will be limited to 14 students. The more than 14 sign up, the cheaper the course will be. Daily sessions are slated for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
