Summit High hockey took a step back from a playoff berth Wednesday, losing to Standley Lake 5-3 in a road game that was rescheduled from last week.
With five games left on the season, the Tigers sit in ninth place in the league (eight teams make the playoffs).
“It was a game that we knew was going to be a hard-fought, tough game. But it was a winnable game,” said head coach Chris Ruhly. “It was four breakdowns, four mistakes, four turnovers, and that's how they got four goals.” (Standley's fifth goal came at the end of the game when Summit was pressing.)
The Tigers got off to a decent start, scoring first, 12 minutes into the game with a goal by Drake Blass, assisted by Jack Nevicosi. But Standley Lake fired back quickly to square things up four minutes later, just before the end of the first period.
In the second, Sean Farley got the go-ahead goal, assisted by Evan Streit, 7 minutes into the period; however, Standley Lake put the nail in the coffin with three unanswered goals to follow.
“The second goal happened on a bad bounce; third goal was a miscue on a pick-up assignment off the face-off — it was all little things that are correctable. But as I said in the locker room, the difference between a good team and a great team is how you respond to adversity and how you respond to the mistakes,” Ruhly said. “And we didn't respond.”
Farley's second-period goal proved to be his last of the season, as he broke his collarbone and will be undergoing surgery today. One of the team's top scorers, Farley will be out for the rest of the season, and the team will be at a loss without his energy on the power play.
In the third, Blass picked up another goal off a power play, assisted by Streit.
“(In terms of the playoffs), we're on the outside looking in, for sure. I think that was one of those games that we kind of needed. We've got five games; games are against Regis (ranked 1) and Resurrection Christian (3), who are two of the top teams in the league,” Ruhly said.
It's safe to say the Tigers (9) need to pick up at least three of their final five games to have a shot at the playoffs, according to their coach. Without conceding anything to the first- and third-ranked opponents, it's also safe to say the upcoming games against Columbine (13), Aspen (10) and Monarch (5) are crucial to their playoff hopes.
“It's a possibility still, but we've got to take care of our business, and we might need a little bit of help as well,” Ruhly said. “We've got a couple games in-hand on a couple teams, but this Friday (Senior Night vs. Columbine) is an absolute must-win, and then traveling Tuesday to Aspen is another must-win situation.”
