Vail's Back Bowls, Blue Sky closed for the season

VAIL, Colo. - Vail Mountain's Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin will be closed for the rest of the season, mountain officials said Sunday.

On Sunday, Vail was running 21 of 31 lifts, with 108 of 193 runs open. Of its 5,289 total acres of terrain, 1,476 acres were open. Game Creek Bowl remains open.

The mountain is reporting a base depth of 28 inches, with 213 inches of total snowfall so far this year. Vail averages 366 inches of snow per year, and received 524 inches last season.

Some snow is predicted to fall Tuesday, with little or no accumulation expected, according to the National Weather Service. The rest of the week is expected to be sunny, with highs in the 50s and 60s.

The Back Bowls and Blue Sky Basin opened later than normal this year because of low snowfall. The ropes dropped on the terrain in mid-January.

Vail Mountain is scheduled to close for the season April 15.
