Eagle County Fire & Water Experts Work with Contractors at May 4 Workshop

VAIL, CO - As the threat of drought continues in Colorado with record-breaking temperatures, the Associated Landscape Contractors of Colorado (ALCC) has reached out to wildfire and water utilities experts in Eagle County to present at a May 4 workshop. The workshop will consist of four presentations including:•"Managing Fuels in the Home Ignition Zone" presented by Eric Lovgren, Eagle County Wildfire Mitigation Manager•"Plants with Altitude - drought tolerant plant" presented by Pat Hayward, Plant Select Director, Colorado State University•"Water supply priorities during drought" presented by Todd Fessenden, Eagle River Water and Sanitation District Director of Operations•"Tree Pests" presented by Tom Eager, USDA Forest Service entomologistThe workshop, which is free and open to the public, goes from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Donovan Pavilion, 1600 South Frontage Road West in Vail. "The timing of the ALCC workshop is perfect," said Eagle River Water and Sanitation District Director of Operations Todd Fessenden. "Outdoor water use is a primary focus in the District's efforts to mitigate drought impacts. Landscape professionals are key partners for us to be successful in our plan to reliably deliver water through the irrigation season.""The purpose of the workshop is to educate contractors and homeowners on a variety of topics important to mountain communities," said ALCC executive director Kristen Fefes. According to Fefes, the presenters will discuss ways to incorporate defensible space against fire though landscaping, how low snowpack may affect water availability for landscapes, drought-tolerant plants that thrive at high altitudes and give updates on tree pests including mountain pine beetle.
