Guenther Hofeditz, loveable curmudgeon of Breckenridge, dies

Another loss of a Breckenridge "original" with the death of Guenther Hofeditz, former chef, owner and major domo of the Ore Bucket Lodge.

Guenther was born in Frankfurt, Germany July 22, 1931 and died April 27, 2012. Guenther was introduced to the American music world through a working association with Stan Kenton when Kenton was on tour in Germany during the 1950s. As an immigrant to the US, Guenther was drafted into the US Army and stationed at Camp Carson in summers and Camp Hale in winters where he associated with many of the present-day ski industry notables. After serving his new country, he renewed his association with Stan Kenton, serving as road manager for the band internationally. His managerial success landed him with the Modern Jazz Quartet and other well-known jazz impresarios.

Ultimately, he purchased and refurbished the Brown Hotel, renamed the Ore Bucket featuring Victorian decor, excellent food and the best jazz around. Many will remember the lighting of the Ore Bucket Christmas tree with candles, where the first lighting was for absent friends and the second for Humanity. Guenther was active with the Breckenridge Chamber of Commerce in the 1960s. Responsible for the Ullr Parade in 1964, he used his influence to get the Fort Carson marching band to lead the parade immediately following a buzz over Main Street by two military jets. The best parade ever!

Eventually Guenther left the Ore Bucket and returned to Germany to care for his ailing sister. During that period in Frankfurt, he worked as head of security for United Airlines in the Frankfurt Airport. He returned to Breckenridge in the 1990s where his favorite things were his cabin in the Silver Horseshoe above Fairplay, his jazz record collection and "Foxy" who often slept next to him.

There will be a memorial gathering at 3 p.m. June 23 at Carter Park, service after 5 p.m. Questions, call (970) 393-2425.
