Saturday, enjoy the beauty of the Dillon Reservoir while supporting Summit County's furry friends.
The Dillon Marina is holding its Lets Go Boating Fundraiser in conjunction with National Marina Day Saturday, with all proceeds going toward the League for Animals and People of the Summit. The organization reduces pet overpopulation through spay and neuter programs in Summit County, and assists low-income owners in need of financial assistance for their pets.
"The marina is a very dog-friendly place. A lot of times you come down here and see just as many dogs as people," said marina office manager Shannon Jakoby. "It's the charity that makes the most sense."
At Lets Go Boating, a longtime annual event at the marina, participants get 45-minute boat tours around the reservoir - on either a pontoon or a sailboat - "just to get people out on the water," Jakoby said. Tours will be led by volunteer captains, some of them marina sailing instructors, and others marina customers.
Tickets are $20 for adults, and $10 for children, with everything going to LAPS.
"So they get time out on the boat, and LAPS gets the money for it," Jakoby said.
The Lets Go Boating fundraiser is the perfect tie-in to National Marina Day since it's also about getting folks out on the water, Jakoby said. The marina holiday, also celebrated on Saturday, is meant to introduce people to the "fun and benefits of boating and the marina lifestyle," according to the day's website.
The marina will also have a few informational stations set up: At one, a boat decontamination demonstration station focused on zebra mussels, and at another, knot-tying demonstrations.
The day's attendees can also enter a drawing for a free pontoon rental. For those who prefer to show themselves around the reservoir, all boat rentals will be 20 percent off.
And of course, the Tiki Bar will be open, Jakoby said.
"A lot of people are here for years and never get out on the lake," Jakoby said. "It's meant to get people to spend some time on the reservoir they drive by everyday. When you get out there, you get kind of hooked."
