A race ranking among the Tour de France and other world championships, the USA Pro Challenge promises to bring top cyclists to Summit County this August.
To prepare, the Breckenridge USA Pro Challenge planning committee is setting the stage with a variety of events, including a free performance by Maceo Parker at the Breckenridge Riverwalk Center Aug. 24.
"We chose Maceo Parker because he puts on a super high energy show," said Mike Schilling, committee co-chair. "We think that his style would go great and keep the energy going all night in Breckenridge."
Parker is an upbeat jazz and funk artist who has collaborated with Ray Charles, Dave Mathews Band, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ani DiFranco, James Taylor and De La Soul.
Stage 5 of the USA Pro Challenge race will begin in Breckenridge Aug. 24. The race will be broadcast live on a big screen Jumbotron in downtown Breckenridge Aug. 23-25 for spectators to catch all of the turns along Main Street in Breckenridge toward Boreas Pass, as well as the finish of Stage 5 in Colorado Springs later that day.
The race begins with neutral lap through downtown Breckenridge at 10:50 a.m. on Washington Street and Main.
Events in conjunction with the race begin Aug. 23 with a poker ride with the Summit Fat Tire Society, a film festival, and many others ways for "spectators to participate," in the festivities, Schilling said.
"Cycling is a very unique sport," Schilling said. "Spectators can't be right on the field for most sports, but here you can you can ride on the same roads as the pros - right along Main Street."
Being able to see the end of the stage in Colorado Springs is icing on the cake.
"We want to invite everyone visiting Summit County or living here to come down to the Blue River Plaza to see the stage finish on the Jumbotron," Schilling said.
