Summer shredding at Copper Mountain

Copper Mountain's Rail Jam on June 30 was such a success - selling out to 100 competitors - the resort teamed with Woodward to open the terrain park to the public.

As conditions permit, the ski area will host Summer Shredding three-hour sessions every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Skiers and snowboarders can enjoy the rails and boxes during the special summer sessions at Copper for $10. "We're capping the sessions at 50 people so that there isn't overcrowding," Katherine Bush, spokeswoman for Copper Mountain, said.

The Summer Shredding session on Saturday, the first day open to the public, sold out on Friday.

The sessions will continue every Saturday through July and into August if conditions permit.

"There's no telling how the weather is going to be, but we want to keep pushing until there's literally no snow," said Jason George, park manager for Woodward at Copper.

The Woodward terrain park at Copper is utilizing snow left over from the half pipe to supplement the boxes and rails.

"The snow is all right, it's really slushy," said Boulder resident Mark Lynn. "It's still great to come out here and ride in July, you really can't complain."

Skier Jaron Stabler from Silverthorne came out to experience the terrain park.

"This is awesome, you can't beat a Saturday in July doing this in Colorado," Stabler said.

Park organizers are optimistic about the possibility of expanding the Summer Shredding sessions.

"Based on the great turnout from this week's Summer Shredding session, we will look for more opportunities to expand to more sessions in the future," said Ben Brown, director of Woodward at Copper.

The terrain park is located at the base of Copper Mountain near the American Flyer lift and Jack's restaurant.

"We've had a terrain park open during the summer in the past but only during camps," Bush said. "Now it's possible for the public to enjoy and practice the Woodward park."
