The Breckenridge Music Festival orchestra will present Summit County with a program that demonstrates the changes composition has gone through in almost 200 years, with compositions ranging from 1823 to 2010.
"Serenade" is the program, set for Thursday night at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. The evening's performance includes pieces by composers Gioacchino Rossini, Jake Heggie and Johannes Brahms.
The concert is named for Brahms' Serenade No. 1 in D major. The piece was his first published orchestral work. Brahms originally wrote the piece for a chamber ensemble of woodwinds and strings, but it was suggested he should arrange the piece for orchestra for the piece to reach its full potential.
After Brahms worked many months, adding movements and changing the orchestration until it was to his liking, the piece premiered March 3, 1860. In the end, the piece has the air of a dance throughout, with a rather carefree ambiance, according to Olivia Grover, spokesperson for the orchestra.
In addition to Brahms' Serenade, the orchestra will also perform Jake Heggie's concerto for flute "Fury of Light." Heggie said that his piece is based on one of his favorite poems, "Sunrise" by Mary Oliver. The poem explores the endless search for happiness, and asks a fitting question for wind players, such as "What is the name of the deep breath I would take over and over for all of us?"
The evening's performance features flutist Helen Blackburn, principal flutist with the Dallas Opera Orchestra, and a member of the faculty at Texas Christian University. She is also a member of the contemporary music ensemble Voices of Change.
Tickets for "Serenade" range from $25-$35 for adults to $10 for students and $7 for juniors. The festival also offers a discounted four pack of tickets, which starts at $90.
