Obesity problem topic of Thursday discussion, film

Colorado and Summit County aren't immune to the obesity problem, according to Joanna Rybak, LiveWell Summit County director. In fact, if the current numbers of the state's overweight and obese adults were the same in 1995, Colorado would have been the fattest state, she said. It's just that between now and then, every other state found itself growing larger as well.

So, to educate the community about growing obesity trends, and help combat the problem, LiveWell and the Keystone Center are holding a screening of part of HBO's "The Weight of the Nation," a documentary examining the facts and myths of the public health issue, and how it affects the health of the nation and the health care system. The one-hour section of the series being shown, "Challenges," looks at the causes of obesity, why Americans eat as poorly as they do, and what can be done.

Rybak said organizers hope to connect the message back to the community, and to the resources available in Summit County.

The screening will be followed by a discussion with local and regional experts: Joel Hauswirth, food services director for Summit School District; Don Parsons, retired general surgeon and Kaiser Permanente executive; Jen Santry, community programs director for High Country Conservation Center; Sarah Vaine, executive director for Summit County Community Care Clinic; and Zachary Taylor, regional director for the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

This event is open to the public at no charge; however, donations will be accepted for Nancy's Community Garden. Refreshments will be served, including some veggies from Nancy's.

Participants will have a chance to win door prizes at the end of the evening, like a community garden plot for the 2013 growing season, and an Arapahoe Basin lift ticket for two.
