Lady harriers remain on winning pace

The Summit High School girls' cross-country team finished first again in Tuesday's Buena Vista Invitational, marking their second first place finish of the season with two second-places also in the bag.

Running amidst six team, the girls placed ahead of Salida with 16 points to their 30. Woodland Park came in third amongst the women with 48 points.

Freshman McKenna Ramsay ran the 5k race in 21 minutes, 19 seconds to place second while junior Katherine Pappas finished just 10 seconds behind, with a 21:29, to place third. Freshman Ruthie Boyd was fifth in 22:08 and fellow classmate McKinley Jones was sixth in 22:23. In the small meet standard, the top four runners' scores apply to the team total.

Meanwhile, senior Sydney Stein finished 16th with a 23:23, freshman Emily Pappas was 24th in 24:41 and Riley Vargo finished 29th in 25:06 to round out the varsity seven.

"The meet was at Buena Vista River Park and the course was a mix of dirt road and singletrack above the Arkansas River," head coach Heather Quarantillo said.

Assistant coach Kevin Mastin also enjoyed attending the meet for the first time.

"This was our first time at this meet," he said. "We liked the course; we'll be back. It is a modified two-lap course which parallels the Arkansas River. The course was mostly flat and fast, however, there were a number of chicanes and hairpin turns that made the course deceptively technical."

Quarantillo continued, "It was a beautiful venue and the weather was perfect for running. (Ramsay) and Katherine (Pappas) paced together the entire race. It was amazing to watch their racing teamwork developing. Jones outsprinted two Salida girls right at the finish to claim sixth as our final scorer."

At the same meet, the boys' team finished fourth of eight teams with 64 points. Salida won with 25.

Junior Liam Meirow finished in second place in 18:18. Fellow junior Robert Koegel was 13th in 20:10 while senior Danny Cuadrado finished 19th in 20:37. Senior Shane Arnold was 30th in 21:10 and sophomore Colin McGrew finished 32nd in 21:28. Also finishing in the 30s were sophomore Kevin Curnutte (33rd in 21:33) and junior Anders Lewis (34th with the same time).

"This was a quick turnaround from our effort on Saturday and the team will be recharged and ready to race at Addenbrooke Park in Lakewood for the Brighton Runner's Roost Invitational Tuesday," Quarantillo said. "It is always one of the biggest races in the state and they expect roughly 400 runners in each race - complete with lots of water crossings to add to the fun."
