SHS harriers place first in Brighton invitational

Junior Liam Meirow and freshman McKenna Ramsay fought to win their races Tuesday - and did.

Both cross-country runners finished first in their fields of 425 (boys) and 381 (girls) in Brighton, where 32 teams had gathered to race.

"To get a win on both sides is cool," assistant coach Kevin Mastin said.

Meirow had to fight for his win, head coach Heather Quarantillo said. He was neck-and-neck throughout the race with his rival from the recent Buena Vista meet, but this time, Meirow came out on top. At the final water crossing, Meirow got out ahead and maintained his lead to the finish.

"He had to work for it," Quarantillo said.

The same was true for Ramsay, who ended up pulling out with a nearly 10-second lead for first place. She finished with the second-fastest course time, just five seconds from the record. Meirow had the third-fastest time for boys.

Freshman Ruthie Boyd had to fight for her third-place finish, as well, though in the end, she held off the fourth-place finisher by five seconds. Junior Katherine Pappas passed two D'Evelyn girls in the final 400 meters for a sixth-place finish.

"It was exciting ... to win with that kind of competition," Quarantillo said.

As teams, the boys finished fifth and the girls finished first - again. That marks three first-place finishes for the season and two second places.

The girls' team totaled 22 points, "an amazingly low score," head coach Heather Quarantillo said. D'Evelyn tallied 36 points to finish second. The girls won the Brighton race twice before, in 2007 and 2008. The team has been attending for at least 11 years.

On Saturday, the team heads to Glenwood Springs to see its league competition for the second time this season. It will be the first time the runners attend the race at Colorado Mountain College - Spring Valley.
