Loveland Ski Area kicks off 75th season today

Joining the list of ski areas open in Colorado, Loveland Ski Area will kickoff its season opening today with chairlifts starting at 9 a.m.

"We know there are a lot of really anxious skiers and riders ready to get this season started," said John Sellers, spokesman for the ski area. "Our snow quality is great and our team has been working really hard to open with these conditions."

The ski area will open one top-to-bottom run, including the Catwalk, Mambo and Homerun trails, a combined total of approximately 1,000 vertical feet with an 18-inch base.

Loveland's park crew set up five features to ride today, including a mini wall ride, lift tower rail, single barrel shotgun and two flat boxes.

The first chairlift departs at 9 and will run until 4 p.m. Chairlifts start operating at 8:30 a.m. on weekends.

"It's an honor to get on the first chair at Loveland for the season, I'm sure we'll start seeing people get to the ski area very early and we're expecting to have a good turnout," Sellers said.

Last season the resort opened Oct. 14, after the help of a snowstorm that brought six inches of snow adding to the ski area's man-made base. The 2010-2011 season kicked off Oct. 24.

Nearby Arapahoe Basin opened Oct. 17 with an 18-inch base, one intermediate trail and one lift operating. The ski area was the first in Colorado to open this winter.

Other Colorado ski areas have set opening days for November or December.

"We're right on track with our opening, we would have liked to been first in the state or in North America, but our team only opens with good conditions for our guests," Sellers said.

Today's forecast calls for mostly sunny skies with temperatures soaring up into the high 50s - it's going to feel like spring skiing.

Lift ticket rates for the early season will be $49 for an adult full day and only $25 for a child full day. Half day and flex tickets are not available during the early season.

Loveland snowmaking crews will continue to make snow and will announce additional trail openings throughout the season on the ski area's website.
