Millie Hamner, our state representative, has served Colorado children and schools for more than 30 years as a teacher and educational leader and she is respected statewide for her work ethic and commitment to public education. I had the honor of working with Millie for six years while she served as superintendent of Summit schools and during that time she consistently used her skills as a listener, problem solver and consensus-builder to forge positive relationships and find collaborative solutions to move our district forward and prepare our students for the 21st century.
Thirty years of experience working in education has given Millie the insight into how to support our public schools. Her specific ideas include:
> Building public support for public education by advocating for transparency and continual improvement;
> Having the opportunity to revise the School Finance Act to increase fairness, equity and adequacy of funding for our schools;
> Working hard to improve kindergarten readiness; currently one-in-three kindergarteners enter school not prepared for school success and are four times more likely not to graduate!
Millie has lived on the Western Slope for more than 30 years and understands and appreciates our unique mountain lifestyle. She also understands the challenges of mountain community economics and importance of supporting small business, tourism, the environment and our quality of life, in addition to education. These are the reasons I will be voting for her and encouraging others to help send this good, sensible person back to the state Legislature!
