Man accused of starting wildfire in SW Colo. ID'd

CORTEZ - A 53-year-old Dolores man accused of starting a wildfire that prompted evacuations in southwest Colorado has been identified.

The Cortez Journal reports (http://bit.ly/URLMR0 ) Roger Stratton, identified as the suspect by the Montezuma County Court, was taken into custody Thursday on a warrant for felony fourth-degree arson.

The Roatcap Fire burned more than 400 acres and prompted evacuations of about 30 homes in Montezuma County after it started Wednesday.

Sheriff Dennis Spruell says the fire was not set intentionally, but the person involved needed to be held accountable for what he called careless actions. Authorities have said the fire was sparked by someone burning trash on private land.

Residents have since been allowed to return home, and the fire is largely contained. No structures were lost.
