Frisco: High Country Healthcare wins approval as Centering Pregnancy program site

High Country Healthcare OB/GYN Specialists' medical practice in Frisco now offers the only Centering Pregnancy program site in the Rocky Mountain region.

CenteringPregnancy is a group-based health care, education and social support program, which focuses on comprehensive patient care, boosting favorable health outcomes for mothers and their newborns. High Country Healthcare recently passed a rigorous six-month evaluation period to receive its certification, including meeting standards outlined for specific birth weight goals and statistical reduction in the number of caesarian deliveries.

"We're proud to be the region's only provider of this March of Dimes-approved program," said Rhonda Koehn, High Country Healthcare CEO. "Our clients should not have to travel to Denver or Colorado Springs to find the kind of support that will result in healthier families."

CenteringPregnancy offers prenatal care and education provided in a relaxed group setting. Each group of eight to 12 women with similar due dates meets for 10 sessions throughout their pregnancy and early postpartum period to share their collective experiences. Program participants learn care skills, meet with their doctor and other health care specialists, enjoy facilitated discussions and develop a support network with other group members.

Specific CenteringPregnancy program topics range from pre-natal nutrition, fetal growth and development and preparation for and signs of labor, to labor decisions, breastfeeding and post-partum depression, among others.

"We urge all of our pregnant clients to participate in Centering Pregnancy," said Barbara Steppe, OB/GYN Specialists clinic manager. "This model of care empowers women to choose health-promoting behaviors. The babies of program participants are less likely to deliver prematurely and are born at healthier weights. The feedback from new mothers and the bonds they've formed with people in the group has been truly rewarding."

High Country Healthcare OB/GYN Specialists also offers additional, affiliated prenatal care programs on topics ranging from natural childbirth to successful breastfeeding. For more info, contact High Country Healthcare OB/GYN specialists at (970) 668-5771 or visit HighCountryHealth.com.
