John Denton Greaves Jr. (aka Big John), formerly of Dillon, died Oct. 14 at Hospice of Boulder/Broomfield County. He was 87 years old.
John was born Nov. 20, 1924, to John Denton Greaves and Margaret Doris Howard in New York, N.Y. John was a sergeant with the 4th Marine Division and coordinated naval gunfire support during WWII. Upon returning from the war, John enjoyed a successful career as a salesman with Moore Business Forms that brought him from Manhattan to Colorado. He spent many happy years racing his sailboat on Lake Dillon, teaching skiing at Keystone Resort, cycling and camping and canoeing with friends. John's next move was to Kremmling, where he owned a cattle ranch and embraced the cowboy lifestyle. John's last move was back to Broomfield, where he was an active member of St. Ambrose Episcopal Church and Broomfield Rotary. One of John's favorite activities in his later years was taking his golden retriever "Ruff" to the local dog park and fraternizing with other dog lovers.
John is survived by his sister, Janet Howard; daughter, Gail Barrera; son, Gary Greaves; grandson, Matthew Hyland; granddaughters, Jaime Brede and Brandy Fox; and five wonderful great grandchildren.
The interment of John Greaves will take place at Dillon Cemetery on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 1 p.m.
