Faust: Call yourself what you really are: pro-birth

Re: "Common sense may save our nation," by Don Chisholm, letters, Nov. 3

The incoherent ramblings of Don Chisholm's letter show neither common sense, or the ability of the political far right in this country to still be taken seriously.

For starters, do the successes and failures of the Obama administration deserve serious discussion? Of course. Does that mean that Obama should be compared to King George, Hitler, Stalin, or any of the countless other tyrants that the far right throws out there? The very thought is ridiculous.

Secondly, I am sick of the right pretending that Roe v. Wade was some type of vast left wing conspiracy. Roe v. Wade was decide by a conservative Supreme Court based on conservative principles. Of the nine-member court, five Republican appointed Justices sided with the majority opinion, and only on Republican appointee apposed it. It was decided on the conservative principle that the individual right to liberty of the mother supersedes any interest the government has in promoting "potential" child birth.

Along those same lines, the right needs to stop using the abortion argument. It has been decided, and is not going to change without a constitutional amendment. The fact that a majority of Americans support a woman's right to choice, and that percentage hasn't changed significantly in 50 years means that the chance of it being ratified by 3/4 of U.S. states is essentially zero. It doesn't matter who gets elected to any office, that is never going to change in the foreseeable future.

If the right was really as "pro-life" as it claims, why not support measures to ensure that already born children have access to food, education, and healthcare? The GOP has continually fought against children for the last 25 years.

Instead of claiming to be pro-life, why don't you call yourself what you really are: pro-birth.
