Jam act brings musical 'ramble' to three20south

Special guest Pete Wall joins on saxophone to add a funky element to Whitewater Ramble's show tonight at three20south in Breckenridge.

The Colorado-bred, Fort Collins-based quintet combines mandolin, fiddle, acoustic guitar, upright bass, drums and vocals to explore musical boundaries and create innovative cover song interpretations, "grassing-up everything from disco house grooves to roots to Americana" in a style band members describe as "high-octane Rocky Mountain dancegrass."

The "whitewater" in Whitewater Ramble (WWR) comes from a rushing whitewater experience; the "ramble" signifies diverse musical styles. Special guest Wall, who tours with The Motet, Particle and Game 7, adds the sound of his "dynamic sax" to the ramble, WWR mandolinist/vocalist Patrick Sites said.

In its more than 700 live performances, Whitewater Ramble has shared the stage with Michael Franti and Spearhead, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, Greensky Bluegrass, Cornmeal, The Infamous Stringdusters, Dark Star Orchestra, Little Feat and The New Mastersounds, among others. In January, it joins producer Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth and special guests to record a new studio album; this comes on the heels of its September release, "Live From the Big Sky Vol. 2: Covering Some Territory."

As to the group's source of inspiration, Sites said, "Sometimes the best ideas come during a live show - could be current events, maybe seeing another live performance, visiting a beautiful place - anywhere really. We've even jammed in a truck stop parking lot and gotten some ideas. We all collaborate on various levels," he said. "Nearly everyone sings and writes in the group."

Concertgoers can expect "fun cover songs, twisted and original music spanning multiple genres, often all in one song," not to mention "great energy, lots of dancing, lots of drinking and good times," Sites said.

The group played the Breckenridge Town Party and a late night set at three20south last summer.
