Soon, a new government will be installed in Washington. The newly re-elected president will take the oath, "I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States." The newly elected Congress will make a similar declaration.
We must remember that the purpose of the Constitution is to codify the principles expressed in our Declaration of Independence: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men (people) are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness - That to secure these Rights, Governments are instituted among Men (people) deriving their just Powers from the Consent of the Governed...."
We are drifting away from those principles. Example: when asked what part of the Constitution authorizes the federal government to pass the Affordable Care Act, The Speaker of the House replied, "Are you serious? Are you serious?" Also, "We have to pass it so we'll know what's in it." Other examples of infractions abound, such as when the president appointed czars who are neither accountable to the people nor even to Congress to regulate our lives. We have relinquished our own responsibilities and consented to let government run our lives at other people's expense at the peril of our God-given rights.
Times have changed since the founding. People believe that modern technology, which was not available back then, makes our 18th century Constitution obsolete. However, what has not changed is the human need for freedom. If we elect political leaders who ignore the founding principles, what's the point in having a Constitution? If we don't have the Constitution, how can we expect to enjoy the God-given rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness?
Smart as they've become over the past two centuries, political leaders are not smarter than we the people, nor do they know better how we should live our lives. Do not consent to let them take away the freedom to live the way we choose.
