'Celebrating Home' with Christy Rost

Christy Rost, whose television special, "A Home for Christy Rost: Thanksgiving," has been broadcast nationally from her restored historic Breckenridge home, Swan's Nest, since 2009, comes to The Next Page Bookstore in Frisco Saturday to sign copies of her latest book and offer samples of her recipes. An extension of her Thanksgiving show concept, "Celebrating Home: A Handbook for Gracious Living" (Bright Sky Press, 2012) is a photograph-laden guide to nesting and entertaining at home. The book includes ideas on decorating, table settings, party vignettes, serving, creating warm interiors, flower arranging and recipes. Sections such as "Before Guests Arrive," "Parties - Taking Advantage of Small Spaces," "Overnight Guests" and "The Magic of Lighting" make entertaining easy, and there are more than 100 full-color photographs by award-winning photographer Rick Souders, taken at Swan's Nest. The recipes are inspired by Rost's life in Texas and the Colorado Rockies. "One of my inspirations for writing 'Celebrating Home' was a conversation I overheard in City Market's baking aisle a few years ago," Rost said. "A little girl asked her mother if she would bake a birthday cake for her, to which the mother replied, 'Honey, cakes don't turn out well at this altitude. Let's buy you a cake.' The girl's face fell; she was so disappointed. I decided then and there that my next book would feature recipes adapted for every altitude - including a divine birthday cake."Rost is recently back from the first part of her book tour, and on Dec. 11, she did an interview on Martha Stewart Radio for "Morning Living," hosted by Betsy Karetnick and Brian Kelsey. "Martha Stewart paved the way for many of us in the lifestyle arena and has shared enormously creative ideas over the years - turning everyday homemaking tasks into an art," Rost said. Her own fans appreciate what she described as her "realistic, attainable approach," "flavorful recipes that work even at high altitude" and her "focus on family, friends and home as a place of warmth, welcome, joy and peace in a setting of casual elegance." "When it comes to the holidays, we want recipes that impress, but don't take all day to make," Rost replied when asked for holiday cooking suggestions. "My Cherry Rhubarb Tart, adapted for the season by substituting fresh cranberries for the rhubarb, is a perfect example - buttery, flaking pastry that cradles a sweet/tart filling of prepared cherry pie filling mixed with fresh cranberries, a little sugar and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice, topped with an easy lattice crust."The recipes are designed to work at sea level and high altitude, and many can be prepared ahead of time. Her Fillet of Beef Tenderloin from "Celebrating Home," discussed on Martha Stewart Radio, is "garnished with kosher salt, smoked sea salt flakes, freshly ground pepper mlange and a generous topping of fresh garlic." It makes for a festive Christmas dinner, and she recommends carving and serving the leftover beef on "thick-sliced rustic bread with a topping of Roasted Garlic Mayonnaise."On the decorating front, Rost advises clearing clutter so that decorations shine. "Whether home is a small log cabin, condo or spacious house, create a sense of peace and joy when decorating for Christmas," she said. "Fresh greenery, clear glass icicles or a collection of mini-frosted trees bring a wonderful sense of nature into your dcor." No-fuss decorating solutions for mountain visitors include embellishing dining room lighting fixtures with bows and "ornaments tied with ribbon and strings of beads," while "being careful to keep all decorations away from the light bulbs," Rost said. Her book tour resumes in early 2013 and runs through fall, including a culinary cruise from Rome to Monte Carlo in October, hosted by the author, aboard Regent Seven Seas' Voyager. After that is a new national television series for American Public Television, "At Home with Christy Rost," now in pre-production. "'Celebrating Home' is the book my readers and television viewers have asked me to write," said Rost.
