Summit Up 1-8-1: Smack dab in the middle of Ullr Fest

Good morning and welcome to Summit Up, the world's only daily column that's ready for some Ullr festivities - the crazier the better. Now that the king and queen have been crowned - congratulations to Dave and Cindy Love - and Ullr has a sweet new outfit, it's time for things to really get going.

The next big event is the Ullympics (move over, London!) where teams compete in fun and crazy competitions like the frying pan toss, group ski racing and ski boot relays.

Back in ancient days, the Norwegians (original worshippers of Ullr) made their own fun, passing time with strategic board games similar to modern-day chess, more rowdy games of drinking and inventing insulting poetry, and even more rowdy games of bone throwing, swimming and wrestling.

Wednesday hosts the Ullr Dating Game at 7 p.m. at Cecilias where for one night Ullr becomes the god of love and starts a few winter romances.

Thursday is the big day with the Ullr Fest parade and town bonfire. Because really, what says 'bring us snow' better than borderline inappropriate floats and a blazing bonfire of last year's skis? Nothing, that's what. And if that wasn't explosive enough, there will also be fireworks.

Breckenridge Distillery is also hoping to shake things up in the world records arena by hosting an attempt for the world record in the Shot Ski event. "Shot ski" is when four or five shots are attached to a ski, lifted and drunk at the same time. The plan is to get 50 skis together (for the 50th anniversary) and break the world record right before the parade.

For those who believe laughter is the best medicine - both for healthy bodies and a healthy ski season - Friday is Comedy Night at the Beaver Run Resort. It's a good way to see which of your friends has the best booming Viking laugh.

The Ullr Classic pond hockey tournament follows on Saturday with competitions on the ice. Sunday wraps up the festivities with the Ullr Fashion Show for your last chance to see Viking-chic on display and to display those horns and fur-lined capes yourself.

Crazy competitions, bonfires, fireworks, parades and Vikings - we're looking forward to experiencing the rest of the week, and we hope you are too. We out.
