Renowned jazz pianist brings new trio to Frisco

The Barkley Ballroom in Frisco transforms into a traditional jazz club Saturday night as renowned pianist Jon Wirtz brings his newest trio, Nuskool, to Summit County for the first time.

Collectively having graced stages from Costa Rica to both U.S. coasts, drummer Alejandro Castano, bassist Patrick McDevitt and pianist Jon Wirtz mesh their creativity in Nuskool.

"There are so little opportunities in Summit County to enjoy jazz music, so I think it's very exciting to see these amazing international musicians, who have been on TV shows such as 'The Late Show with David Letterman' play in the county," said Todd Altschuler of the Barkley Ballroom.

Pianist Jon Wirtz has shared the stage with Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Robbie Krieger (former keyboardist of The Doors), Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers, Melissa Etheridge, Matt Morris and Justin Timberlake. Witrz is the man behind Nuskool's compositions and original sound, seasoning it with elements from his own diverse musical background.

Drummer Alejandro Castano brings influences from John Bonham (formerly of Led Zeppelin) to the pocket grooves of Questlove and the world jazz of Max Roach. Bassist Patrick McDevitt shares his technical versatility of playing both upright and electric bass, adding to the group's rhythm.

On Saturday, concertgoers can expect a "real jazz lounge atmosphere," said Altschuler. "Usually on Saturday nights most people just go out to dinner, so I think it will be nice to experience something different - to enjoy a jazz concert with candlelit tables. ... I think people will be really impressed by the musicians and their talent."

The concert starts at 8:30 p.m. and seating begins at 8. It's $5/general seating; $40/table of four; and $50/table of six. Info and reservations: www.barkleyballroom.com or (970) 708-7042.
