Playoff games a boon for Denver; ski resorts hoping images spur visits

When the football nation turns its eyes toward Denver on Saturday for the Broncos playoff game, the state's ski and tourism boosters will make sure Colorado is looking her best.

"This is a huge deal for us. It's always great to have a big show and show off our city," said Deborah Park of Visit Denver.

A playoff game can stir anywhere from $9 million to $20 million in economic activity. Denver leaders estimate Saturday's impact will lean toward the high end.

"Because the Broncos are the only NFL team in the Rocky Mountain West, they have a larger fan base from outside the metro area than others, and therefore are likely to attract more out-of-town visitors," said Amber Miller, spokeswoman for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock.

Fan interest in Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is likely to drive high national viewership of the game against the Baltimore Ravens. The star's blue-and-orange No. 18 jersey is popular at Where the Buffalo Roam. The souvenir shop, on the 16th Street Mall, is stocking and staffing for heavy traffic - not just for this Saturday but next week, too.
