Summit County Fishing Report: Lake trout abound in Summit area's iced waters

It won't be long before the rivers start to open up, but until then, it's tailwaters for open water and ice fishing. Tailwaters, such as the Blue River below Dillon Reservoir, remain low, clear and technical. Fine tippets, micro flies and stealthy presentations will produce.

Ice fishing continues to be the best bet for catching. Green Mountain Reservoir has more than a foot of ice and several inches of hardpacked snow. Numerous anglers have been drilling holes, and for good reason - fishing has been solid for small lake trout. Fish water from 40 feet to more than 100 feet deep. Jigs in the range of 2-3 inches tipped with sucker remain consistently good producers.

Wolford Mountain Reservoir has been producing decent numbers of trout using small flies just off the bottom. Consider a two-lure rig, with a jig for the bottom lure and a dropper fly above.

Another good option for lake trout is Williams Fork Reservoir. The fish have been suspending 5-10 feet off the bottom in deeper water. Silver spoons jigged in that range have been producing fish to 21 inches. Move shallow to locate pike.

Tournament fishers worked Granby over last weekend, so if you try it and things are slow, head over to Willow Creek Reservoir. This often-overlooked reservoir has been fishing well for rainbow in the 10-12 inch class. Most any trout tactic will work, but a small jig tipped with a wax worm and a fly dropper above is an excellent tactic.

South Park waters continue to see a lot of anglers, but those reporting in suggest the angler count is exceeding the fish count, so other waters are recommended, such as Turquoise Reservoir or Taylor Park Reservoir. Both have been fishing well recently.
