With 10 inches of fresh powder finally coating the uppermost slopes of peaks 7 and 8, Breckenridge Ski Resort announced plans to open the Imperial Express SuperChair this weekend.
The exact opening time is dependent on conditions and will be announced on the resort's Facebook page, along with various terrain updates.
Imperial - the highest lift in North America - accesses three high-alpine bowls and hike-to terrain in the Lake Chutes and Snow White.
The lift climbs to 12,840 feet in elevation at the top of Peak 8 providing service to a reserve of above-treeline advanced and expert terrain.
Recent storms brought the first significant snowfall to Summit County in roughly a month, dropping several inches in town and eliciting reports of double-digit accumulations at some of the local resorts.
Breckenridge reported 15 inches of new snow between Tuesday and Thursday. Copper Mountain reported 7 inches of new snow Thursday morning and 11 new over the previous 48 hours. Keystone Resort got 4 inches of snow Wednesday night and 5 over the same two-day span. Arapahoe Basin Ski area saw 7 inches of accumulation over the course of three days.
But the storms most heavily favored areas west of Summit County, including Vail Mountain, which reported 2 feet of new snow in the last week.
A series of small systems hit Summit County and western parts of Colorado beginning last weekend and continuing through the week, but the heaviest snowfall held off until Wednesday night.
The weather is expected to dry out over the next several days, with a slight chance of snow this afternoon. Forecasts for the weekend call for sunshine and highs in the low 40s.
Weather watchers do not expect the next snowstorm to arrive until the end of next week.
"Most areas along Interstate 70 will partially clear on Thursday with only lingering snow showers," OpenSnow.com meteorologist Joel Gratz stated. "Something is going to happen late next week (Thursday, Friday), but there's little agreement between the models concerning what this "something" will look like."
