Smith: A monument to community spirit toppled

As I saw the picture of the demolishing of the old Our Lady of Peace church in Dillon Valley it brought much sadness and some memories of the church. As the chairman of the building committee, I remember many of our parishioners and community people that contributed to the success. First and for most a big thanks should go to K. C. Ensor, the founder of the Dillon Valley subdivision. Through his generosity he sold one lot (1 acre) for $1 per sq. ft and donated the next lot (1 acre) to the church.

MisterIvan Burk (now deceased) a local builder built the church with a greatly reduced price and Ron Patterson of Patterson wired the church at again a greatly reduced price. My father-in-law John Gallo and his brother installed the heating system for only the price of the materials/no labor costs as long as my wife and I put them up at our home. Ron Teke of Pieces Builders provided additional finish in latter days on the interior and exterior of the church.

Throughout the years Joe Hoffart of Triangle Electric continued to maintain most of both churches, including plowing the parking lot each week in Dillon Valley. I should also mention the name of the church was the idea of Carolyn Layne of Dillon Valley.

Although this is a short synopsis of the church many locals have been a very large part of this church as prior to completion of the church residents of the north part of the county went to services in every part of the communities of Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne. During construction each of us wondered how long this church would last, hoping for a long time. The cost of this entire facility was slightly under $100,000, thanks to so much generosity from our citizens.
