Dion: Stricter gun control not the answer

No one has the luxury of instantaneous 24/7 protection from law enforcement officers. What is the very best response time you can imagine to a 911 call? Try this: sit for the next three minutes and do nothing but imagine that you are being beaten, raped or stabbed while you wait for the police.

Now, consider those of us who live in rural areas where under the very best circumstances the minimum response time is 25 to 30 minutes! This is not an adverse reflection on our outstanding law enforcement; it is the reality of time and distance.

What kind of weapons and magazines should I have to defend my family against violent intruders, or my livestock against packs of predators? Are six rounds "sufficient?" Ask that mother in Alabama who emptied her gun into one intruder and he still got away!

Universal background checks? Christopher Dorner could have passed any background check. They didn't stop Lanza, Holmes, Cho or Loughner. And whose going to decide what goes into the database and who will have access to the information? Have you heard of FOIA? HIPPA?

Clearly the answer to the current rash of violence is not to be found in stricter gun control. If it were, cities like Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Detroit would be the safest in the nation.
