School vacation dates often do not match up with work vacation dates, as many a parent is aware in Summit County. However, the town of Frisco's recreation department has a program designed to help out parents in this exact situation. It's a day camp for no-school days, where children between the ages of 5-12 can do activities and spend time with their peers while their parents are at work.
Jeremy Bryson works for the recreation department and is into his second year as camp counselor. He said he enjoys doing the activities with the children, which range anywhere between arts and crafts to outside games to trips to the museum.
"We mix some educational stuff into it," he said. "It's a lot of fun things. We like to go places and on field trips. We like to do things around the town as well."
He takes the kids to visit the Mountain Top Children's Museum in Breckenridge, for example, as well as on a ride on the gondola. Every day involves some outdoor or physical play, such as tubing at the Frisco Adventure Park, swimming, bowling or spending time in the park or playground.
Alyssa Lewark, Bryson's co-counselor, knows the camp program inside and out, because she's gone through it.
"I went to this camp from when I was seven to 12," she said, smiling. She spent the next three years as a junior counselor and now is a full counselor. The camp not only happens in winter, but also for spring break and over the summer as well. As a student at Summit High School, Lewark has the camp days off of school and prefers to spend them with the kids, some of whom she has known since they started camp and watched them grow up.
"I like the kids," she said of her favorite part about being a camp counselor. "They're so sweet and adorable."
The first winter camp started Monday and lasts throughout the school district's winter break to Friday. The next camp will take place during the district's spring break, from April 15-19. The program is state-licensed and requires sign-up and registration ahead of time. For more information, contact Linsey Kach at (970) 668-9133 or email@example.com.
