Summit County Arts & Entertainment Briefs: 3-2-2013

The Backstage Theatre in Breckenridge is casting ages 7 and up for its Labor Day production of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast." There are roles for actors, singers, dancers and non-singers, particularly young men ages 10 and up who can move well to play wolves and castle creatures, and actors ages 40 and up to play Maurice and Monsieur D'Arque. Auditions take place March 16 and 17, by appointment only. Call (970) 453-0199 to reserve a spot. The show will premiere Labor Day weekend and perform Aug. 30 to Sept. 2 at the Riverwalk Center in Breckenridge. Rehearsals are scheduled to begin in April, depending on actor availability.

On May 18-19, History Colorado will showcase stories from around the state at the History Colorado Center in Denver to celebrate Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month (AHPM). Organizations and individuals are invited to submit an activity, tour, scavenger hunt or other creative event to be a part of the celebration. There is still time to sign kids up for the Winter Vacation Sensation during Summit School District's winter break. The state-licensed program includes field trips, art projects, games and outdoor play. Slots are open for children ages 5-12 April 15-19. It's $40/day for Frisco residents and $45/day for nonresidents. The camp runs 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with drop-off from 8-8:45 a.m. and pick-up from 4:30-5 p.m. at the Community Center on 3rd Avenue in downtown Frisco. There is no early drop-off or late pick-up option. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

The Snowball festival, headlined by Pretty Lights, STS9 and Big Gigantic, returns to Winter Park for a third year March 8-10. The lineup also includes "Portugal. The Man," Rubblebucket, Robert Randolph & The Family Band, Tumbleweed Wanderers and Kendrick Lamar. The weekend getaway includes music, winter sports, aprs ski and after parties. The search is on for Colorado's outstanding senior volunteers. Sponsored by Home Instead Senior Care, the Salute to Senior Service program recognizes senior volunteers for the contributions they make in local communities. Friends, co-workers, family members and nonprofit organizations are encouraged to nominate deserving seniors for possible state and national honors. Nominations will be accepted through March 31. Each state's winners receive $500 and one national winner receives $5,000 to donate to the winners' charities of choice.
