Author and poet Doann Houghton-Alico set out on a sailing adventure with her husband that became a 10-year journey across 43,000 nautical miles and 41 countries. Houghton-Alico will tell tales of her travels April 5 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eileen & Paul Finkel Auditorium at Colorado Mountain College in Breckenridge.Houghton-Alico and her husband, Wayne Edgar, left from Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., in 2001 and sailed west, returning in 2010. They spent four years in the South Pacific, as well as time in such countries as Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Morocco, exploring most of the countries they visited from both the sea and on land. They encountered storms, pirates and people of every nationality and language.Houghton-Alico will use passages from her two books, the published "Dancing Fish," a nonfiction narrative, memoir and poetry chapbook, and a second book, a memoir, to tell her tales of the adventures, local people, wildlife and what it feels like to be at sea for days on end. Adriano's Bistro, the town of Dillon and the Krystal 93 BBQ at the Summit have announced a Battle of the Bands-style contest. The last band standing according to the people's choice at the BBQ at the Summit will have an opportunity to be the opening band for a Friday night concert at the Dillon Amphitheater in August. The rules are simple: You must be a Summit County resident, and you cannot be a professional musician. The road to the Amphitheater goes through Adriano's Bistro, as well as the Dillon Dam Brewery. There will be a $25 registration fee per person to help defray advertising costs and provide possible prize money. Runners-up will also get to play at the barbecue but will not be part of the voting on Aug. 9 and 10. This is for serious musicians and singers only. Registration day is this Saturday. The U.S. Forest Service and Loveland Ski Area host Loveland's first ever Ski with a Ranger Day on Saturday. Guests can join a Forest Service Snow Ranger for a free and easy run centered on the relationships between Loveland and the land. Topics will include glacial geology, winter ecology, local history and partnerships and are suited for all ages (recommended for ages 8 and older). Visitors should meet at Ptarmigan Roost Cabin at the top of Chair 2 at either 10:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. for a run with the snow ranger, and plan to be there 15 minutes early. The Ski with a Ranger Program will be taking place once a month until the end of the season. The final Ski with a Ranger date is April 27.
The sixth annual Summit Hockey Classic launches April 5 and 6. Vail Summit Orthopaedics, PeakOne Surgery Center, Copper Mountain Resort and Beaver Run Resort will battle for the trophy. Each team has drafted players from a pool of hockey celebrities from the NHL and Division I colleges and local Summit County hockey players to form teams of 16 players. A "Puck Huck" competition will take place each evening. All spectators will receive a puck upon entry that will be tossed onto the ice during an intermission. With the generosity of local individuals and businesses, there will be a silent auction held in the lobby of the outside rink both evenings. On Saturday evening, the "Celebrity Shootout" will take place between the consolation game and the championship game.Game tickets are $5 per evening and available at the door. The Classic is a fundraiser for Summit Youth Hockey, a nonprofit organization offering boys and girls the opportunity to participate in both recreational and competitive hockey programs. In addition to individual development, Summit Hockey seeks to foster the development of the whole child, including such life skills as sportsmanship, mutual respect, integrity, responsibility, teamwork and friendship.
